Social Media Ads

Native ads inside the feeds people scroll daily.

Overview

Social media ads appear within the feeds and surfaces of platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, and X. They blend into the organic content stream — looking much like a normal post — but are bought through each platform's self-serve ad manager with sophisticated audience targeting. Formats range from single image and video to carousels, stories, and shoppable posts.

How it works

Advertisers build campaigns inside a platform's ads manager, defining objective, audience (by demographics, interests, behaviours, or custom/lookalike lists), budget, and creative. The platform runs an auction for each ad slot in a user's feed, balancing the advertiser's bid against a relevance/quality score. Winning ads render inline among organic posts, labelled 'Sponsored'.

Common uses

  • Audience targeting and retargeting at scale
  • Direct response and e-commerce (shoppable ads)
  • Brand awareness via video and stories
  • Lead generation with in-platform forms

Pros & cons

Pros

  • Unmatched audience targeting precision
  • Huge reach across active, logged-in users
  • Rich creative formats (video, carousel, stories)
  • Self-serve — accessible to any budget

Cons

  • Rising costs as platforms mature
  • Privacy changes (e.g. iOS ATT) reduce targeting signal
  • Creative fatigue — needs constant refreshing
  • Walled gardens — data stays on the platform
